The Grass
Buffelgrass, Cenchrus ciliaris, is a perennial bunch grass native to most of Africa, southern Asia, southern Iran, and the extreme south of Europe. It was brought to the US during the 1930's for cattle to eat and for erosion control. Since then it has spread rapidly and is out-competing the native plants. Given enough time it could become the dominant plant in the Sonoran desert. Buffelgrass is an extreme fire hazard. It burns faster and hotter than just about any plant known to botany. From a distance it appears as yellow patches most of the year but turns green during the summer monsoon season.
