Oak Flat - The Land
We live in an electrified society. So we need copper, lots of copper. We'll need more copper as we use more sustainable energy and become more electrified. These words traveled through copper to your screen, copper that could have come from Resolution Mining Company shafts #9 and #10. They stand over one of Earth's largest copper ore deposits. It lies beneath the wooded surface of Oak Flat, Arizona, land regarded as sacred by the San Carlos Apache and other tribes. As soon as the Forest Service gives the go-ahead, Resolution's tunnels will fan out beneath Oak Flat. In time, as planned, the tunnels will collapse to expose the ore. Then much of Oak Flat's trees, trails, and rock formations will cave in on themselves. An area a mile wide and up to a thousand feet deep will be affected. Oak Flat's wild plants may grow back in a century or so. The wild animals may return, and there may be just as many oaks. Or maybe not. Climate change will no doubt have a say in any future land reclamation.
