Dominica
The Williams Family at their front door in Glanvillia near Portsmouth, Dominica. Clockwise from left: Randolph, Fedorra, Midorra, Claudia, and Anorra. Their house has only two small rooms. Randolph supports his family by taking tourists for rides in his rowboat through the forest to see birds. Unfortunately there are not enough tourists in Dominica to keep Randolph and the other boatmen working every day. Randolph and Claudia don't want all their children to grow up in poverty. So Fedora will soon travel to the neighboring island of Guadalupe with a women who has the income to raise her. After telling me this Randolph asked me if I had a girlfriend and if we would be interested in raising Anora. I politely declined. (Scanned from 35mm slide).
Carnival occurs on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday in late winter or early spring. Many Dominicans wear costumes in the big carnival parade in Dominica's capital city Roseau. I planned my 3 week trip to the island to end during carnival weekend. Glad I did. Much of the island danced in the streets of Rouseau to the music of the island's 2 most popular bands who played on a pair of flat bed trucks that crept around the parade route, diagonally across town from each other, all night. At the Salybia Government School in the Carib Territory on Dominica students play a game of rounders as a sailing ship passes by. The game of baseball developed partly from this British sport. A short bat is usually used but the children don''t have one so they use a coconut branch instead. Sometimes a batter hits the ball so far it lands in the ocean. (Scanned from 35mm slide)
