Here's what's left of a big palo verde whose roots grew in soil held in place by the rocks. Erosion removed the soil, probably quickly considering how steep the slope is. Perhaps that's what killed the tree. Or maybe it died when wind broke off it's trunk while the soil was still there. Now the stump and large roots remain, still wrapped around their rocky anchor.
